Democrats Needed March 2nd & March 20th
Dear Neighbors,
Pundits are predicting a Republican backlash against Democrats in November. Do you feel like it’s going to be the other way around? Are you ready for a resounding rejection of the “Party of No” – the party that got us into two wars and left an economic mess for the Dems to clean up? We need all 248 of YOU who attended the landmark 2008 Precinct 224 Convention to COME BACK in 2010! And we need volunteers for the following:
- Bring cookies, coffee, tea, etc. to the 2010 Precinct 224 Convention, March 2nd
- Secretary of the Precinct 224 Convention
- Chair of the Precinct 224 Convention
- Delegates to the 2010 Senate District 13 Convention on March 20th
- Alternate Delegates to the Senate District 13 Convention
- Chair of the Precinct 224 Delegation to the Senate District 13 Convention
Those who attend the precinct convention will elect a secretary and chair of the convention, as well as delegates, alternates, and a delegation chair for the senate district convention. And vote on any resolutions, which are grassroots initiatives that may influence the direction of the Democratic Party. For more information on the precinct convention, see http://www.hcdp.org (page down to 2010 Democratic Precinct Conventions).
Even if you can’t stay for the convention, come by and sign in. It will be great to see everyone again! Bring the whole family and neighbors, too.

Thanks so much if you have already voted. Friday is the last day to vote early in the 2010 Democratic Primary. Still not sure who to vote for? Several organizations have endorsed candidates, including the GLBT caucus (www.thecaucus.org), the Association of Women Attorneys (http://www.awahouston.com), and the Coalition of Harris County Democratic Elected Officials, which you probably received in the mail. For additional information about the candidates and their Democratic leanings, see www.hcdp.org/judges.html
It’s best to vote early, but you can also vote on the primary election date, Tuesday, March 2nd, at Longfellow Elementary School, 7am-7pm. The precinct convention will be held at the polling place starting at about 7:15 or after the poll closes. Obviously, we will not see the same turnout as in 2008, when we caucused for presidential candidates, however it’s still an opportunity to gather and discuss issues, as well as elect delegates to the senate district convention. Come by and sign in, even if you can’t stay for the convention.
After the primary, a campaign kick-off event will be held on Thursday, March 4. Paul Begala, Democratic strategist, CNN commentator, and former Counselor to President Bill Clinton will headline the Harris County Democratic Party Campaign Kick-Off Event on Thursday, March 4, 2010, from 7:00 o’clock to 9:00 o’clock p.m. at St. Arnold’s Brewery, 2000 Lyons Avenue. Tickets for the event are $40 each and can be purchased by clicking HERE.
The Brew-Ha-Ha with Begala will be held two days after the primary election, and by then, it will be time to turn our attention from the spirited primary election to the November general election. Paul Begala should be an energizing and entertaining kick-off speaker to send us off to turn Texas and Harris County blue.
Please forward any letters you have written or thoughts you would like to share about health care reform, politics, or other policy issues and we will post as many as possible on our web site throughout the 2010 election.

Dear Friends and Neighbors,
The 2010 Democratic Primary and Precinct Convention are March 2nd. This is an opportunity to respond to all those who hope Obama fails! The outcome of this mid-term election is critical for the success of Obama’s agenda. As the battle for health care, the environment, and the economy rages on, let’s match the passion of the “Teabaggers” who are outraged about government “tyranny” now that Obama is president. Show your support for Obama by voting in the Democratic Primary and uniting at the 2010 Precinct 224 Convention.
In 2010, Democrats can regain control of the Texas House of Representatives. Control of the House means control of congressional redistricting, which we hope will bring relief to precinct 224 (moved to heavily Republican District 7, represented by John Culberson, in the 2003 Redistricting plan spearheaded by Tom Delay, now known as “the Gene Kelly of disgraced House Majority Leaders” [Texas Monthly]).
Early voting begins February 16th. It’s a long ballot, with seven candidates for governor including former Houston Mayor Bill White. Here are some of the other highlights.
- Our State Senator Rodney Ellis and State Representative Ellen Cohen are unopposed in the Primary.
- Sue Schechter (former chair of the HCDP) is running against Ann Harris Bennett for Harris County Clerk,
- Gordon Quan (former City Councilman) is running against Ahmad Hassan for Harris County Judge
- Diane Trautman is unopposed in the Primary in her second bid for Harris County Tax Assessor-Collector, the elected official who is responsible for voter registration (remember in 2008 Trautman narrowly lost to incumbent Republican Paul Bettencourt, who threw out numerous voter registrations, employed a Republican campaign consultant, and resigned from office two weeks after the election).
- There are several candidates for Lieutenant Governor: Linda Chavez-Thompson, Ronnie Earle, and Mark Katz.
- Kinky Friedman (former Independent candidate for governor) is running as a Democrat against Hank Gilbert for state Commissioner of Agriculture.
There are an overwhelming number of judicial candidates, some of which have rarely if ever voted in a Democratic primary. Organizations like the Association of Women Attorneys, a section of the Houston Bar Association, will be issuing endorsements for judicial candidates, which I will try to obtain and forward to you in early February. For a complete list of candidates in the 2010 Primary, see http://www.hcdp.org/upcoming_elections.html.
Let’s make it a Happy New Decade!!!
